Legend has it that little over three centuries ago, a heavenly confection of honey, roasted nuts, and whipped egg whites was dreamed into being in the small town of Montélimar in France. As with most things completely delicious, it stuck around and became a sweet staple around the globe. Today we call it nougat. Fast-forward around 300 years, and a South African mother-and-son duo decided to bring their take on this much-loved gifting staple to the table. Nicholas Scher and his mother Lianne, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef, spent many happy moments around the kitchen table as he was growing up. This is where she taught him to make some truly excellent nougat, which they packaged to be pretty as a picture.
